KISSIMMEE, Fl. (3/14/10) - The Utica College softball team went 1-1 on its first day in Kissimmee, Florida Sunday. The Pioneers dropped game one 10-1 in five innings against Westminster. Utica bounced back with a 3-2 victory in game two against Nichols. Freshman shortstop Jackie Gallagher drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Pioneers to their first victory of the season. Freshman pitcher Madison Dinsmore won her first collegiate game on the mound for the Pioneers.

In game one against Westminster the Pioneers posted eight hits but left nine runners on base and all eight hits were singles as they dropped the run-rule shortened contest 10-1. Freshman Bridgette Plummer went 2-for-3 in her collegiate debut, while senior Angel Donaghue was 2-for-2 and registered the Pioneers’ lone RBI of the day. Freshman Courtney Rainbow went 1-for-3 at the dish and tallied the Pioneers only run scored.

Utica jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two innings of game two against Nichols. Gallagher drove in junior all-conference centerfielder Kim Martin in the first inning to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. Donaghue stayed hot in her first plate appearance of game-two and ripped an RBI double in the second inning to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.

Nichols responded with two runs in the top of the third to knot the score at 2-2.

After three and a half scoreless inning the Pioneers turned it on in the bottom of the seventh to earn their first win of the season. Two walks, two fielder’s choices and a throwing error set the stage for Gallagher’s game-winning, two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Gallagher’s single scored senior Christine Williams to give the Pioneers the 3-2 victory.

Dinsmore struck out two and stranded nine runners to earn her first collegiate victory on the mound.

Utica returns to action Monday when it squares off against Millikin and McDaniel in back to back games at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
