#44 Rebecca Beyer BOX SCORE UTICA, NY- The Utica College women’s lacrosse team defeated visiting Rochester Institute of Technology 12-11 Saturday afternoon in Empire 8 Conference action on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Freshman and team leading scorer Tammy Kohanski (Corcoran/Syracuse) netted two late goals, just 48 seconds apart with less than ten minutes to go in the contest to propel the Pioneers to victory. Kohanski closed out the day with seven points on six goals and one assist. She has scored at least seven points in six of her last seven contests.
With the win the Pioneers improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Tigers dropped to 3-4 on the year with a 1-3 conference mark. The Pioneers have won five of their last six contests.
The opening 13:13 of the contest featured a back and fourth battle with both teams leading on two separate occasions. RIT took a 4-3 lead after sophomore midfielder Danielle Previ (Shawnee/Medford, NJ) won the draw control and went the distance of the field all alone for her second goal of the contest. Kohanski netted two of the Pioneers first three goals, marking her 34th and 35th goals of the season.
The Pioneers tied the game up at 5-5 following senior attack Casey Pelletier’s (Mercy/Middletown, CT) second goal of the contest. Her 13th goal of the season was unassisted at the 5:14 mark.
Senior midfielder Jessica Cotton (Victor/Victor) took the lead back for the Tigers, 6-5, when she found the back of the net with 2:35 left in the half to close out the first half scoring. Cotton also tallied two assists in the first half.
RIT came out of the gates hot in the second half scoring two goals in the opening minute just ten seconds apart from each other. RIT would add a third unanswered goal at the 23:20 mark of the half to take a commanding 9-5 lead.
UC was not done yet however, answering the Tigers onslaught with four consecutive goals over a span of 5:25 to knot the game back up at 9-9. Freshman classmates Julianne Schultheiss (Commack/Commack) and Lily Fleskes (Dover Sherborn/Daver, MA) kicked off the four goal spurt with their 17th and 10th goals of the season, respectively.
Both teams exchanged goals midway through the half to tie the score up at 10-10 with 11:37 remaining in the contest. Kohanski broke the tie with two straight goals of her own to give UC a 12-10 lead with 7:45 to go. On the year, Kohanski has 51 points on 39 goals and 12 assists.
The Tigers added one more late goal and threatened with a few great scoring opportunities with less than a minute to go but the Pioneers stood their ground and earned their third conference victory of the year.
UC freshman goalie Rebecca Beyer (Titusville/Titusville, NJ) stopped nine shots on the day, while her counterpart Kelsey Evans (Cumberland Valley/Carlisle, PA) made nine saves in 60:00 of work.
