#8 Casey Pelletier BOX SCORE UTICA, NY – The Utica College women’s lacrosse team defeated visiting Elmira College
11-7 in Empire 8 Conference action Saturday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The Pioneers have now won three consecutive games, including two straight against conference opponents.
With the win, UC improved to 3-3 overall on the year and they now boast a 2-1 conference mark. Elmira dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss.
Freshman stand out Tammy Kohanski (Corcoran/Syracuse) led the way for UC with nine points on six goals and three assists. She now has a team-best 27 goals and eight assists on the season and she is now just three points shy of cracking the college’s top ten all-time single-season scoring list.
The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead less than seven minutes into the contest behind two goals a piece from senior attack Casey Pelletier (Mercy/Middletown, CT) and Kohanski. Kohnaski assisted on Pelletier’s first goal and Pelletier returned the favor by assisting on Kohanski’s second goal.
Kohanski added her team-high 24th goal of the season, unassisted, at the twenty two minute mark to give UC a commanding 5-0 lead. At 20:33 Elmira got on the board when Mary-Kate Geratowski (Wilder, VT/Hartford) scored her sixth goal of the season past UC freshman goalie Rebecca Beyer (Titusville, NJ) to cut the Pioneers lead to four goals.
Kohanski would play a part in the Pioneers final four first half goals, scoring three and assisting on junior attack Laura Keating’s (Horseheads/Whitesboro) sixth goal of the season. Kohanski tallied eight first half points as the Pioneers took a seven goal lead into the intermission.
Elmira battled back in the second half outscoring UC 3-0 over the first twenty minutes of the half to make the score 9-5. The Soaring Eagles scored their fourth unanswered goal of the half and forced another UC time out with 6:08 left in the contest when sophomore Allison Nowak (Wayland, MA/Wayland) scooped up a ground ball from five yards out and delivered her first goal of the season.
Over the final six minutes of the contest the Pioneers out scored Elmira 2-1 to seal their second conference victory of the season.
Perry Markell (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) and Geratowski each tallied two goals on the day for the Soaring Eagles, while Elmira sophomore goalie Jalene McCulloch (Belleville, ONT/Millbrook School) stopped 13 shots in her first loss of the year.
The Pioneers out shot the Soaring Eagles 32-13 and scooped up 33 ground balls on the day. UC also caused 33 turnovers compared to EC’s 25 caused turnovers.
Beyer made two saves, both in the second half, to earn her first collegiate victory.
The Pioneers return to action Sunday against conference rival Ithaca College on the turf at Cornell University. The first draw control will take place at 9 a.m.
