#16 Laura Keating BOX SCORE Utica, NY – The Utica College women’s lacrosse team blew past the Hartwick Hawks
16-5 in Empire 8 action Saturday afternoon. UC boasted a 23-10 shot on goal advantage and freshman
Tammy Kohanski (Corcoran/Syracuse) netted seven goals for the Pioneers in the victory.
With the win the Pioneers improve to 2-3 overall and are now 1-1 in the Empire 8 Conference. Hartwick falls to 2-3 overall and drops to 0-1 in conference play.
Utica wasted little time before getting on the board as freshman
Lily Fleskes (Dover Sherborn/Dover, MA) netted her fifth goal of the year and gave UC an early 1-0 lead. Freshman
Julianne Schultheiss (Commack/Commack) went on to score the next two goals and the Pioneers were up 3-0 with 23:28 to play in the first half. Tammy Kohanski scored five of the next seven goals for Utica as they improved their lead to 10-0 with 1:49 remaining in the first half.
Hartwick got on the board at the 1:24 mark as senior Kelsey Campbell (Camillus/West Genessee) netted her 20th goal of the season. UC junior midfielder
Kelly Jones (New Hartford/New Hartford) scored with 15 seconds left in the half and the teams went into halftime with the score 11-1, Utica.
The Pioneers came out in the second half just as they had done in the first half with senior
Laura Keating (Horseheads/Whitesboro) scoring her second goal of the day 40 seconds into the half.
Campbell scored two of the next four Hartwick goals but it was not enough as UC matched by scoring four of their own goals over the remaining 24 minutes to keep the Hawks at bay and cruise to the 16-5 victory.
Junior goalie
Jessica Leclerc (Deerfield Academy/Augusta, ME) made two saves for the Pioneers, while the tandem of freshman Danielle Deperno (Cortland/Cortland) and senior Emily Follit (East Longmeadow/Longmeadow West, MA) combined to save six shots for Hartwick.
Utica College will return to action on Mar. 29 hosting Elmira College. The start is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
