UTICA, NY – The Utica College men’s lacrosse lost to visiting Stevens Institute of Technology 10-3 in Empire 8 Conference action on the turf Saturday at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Junior midfielder Matt Keating (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) led the way for the Ducks with his first four goal game of the season.

With the loss, the Pioneers dropped to 0-5 on the year and they are now 0-1 in conference play. Stevens reached the .500 mark on the year and is now 2-2 overall after early season losses to national powers Cortland State and Springfield College.

Stevens jumped out to a 4-0 first quarter lead to set the tone for the day. Senior attacker and team-leading scorer John Dolny (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) netted the first two goals of the game, his seventh and eighth of the season, on assists from Bobby Steinhauser (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and R.J. Ancona (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip). The Duck’s next two goals were scored by sophomore attacker Daniel Prakopcyk (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) within seven seconds of each other with just under four minutes to go in the first quarter. His fifth and sixth goals of the season were assisted by Joey Simone (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Brandon Faubert (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate).

UC freshman attacker Ryan Schmidt (Whitesboro/Whitesboro) opened the second quarter scoring after beating a Stevens defender on the left and sneaking a shot past goalie Dave Decker (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) short side.

The Ducks answered with five consecutive goals to take a commanding 9-1 lead and seal the victory. Joey Simone tallied his first goal of the season, while Bobby Steinhauser added an unassisted goal at the 7:46 mark of the fourth quarter.

Schmidt and sophomore midfielder Corey Boulio (IHC/Carthage, NY) added late goals for UC but it was not enough.
Paul Phelan (Liverpool/Liverpool) made 15 saves in net for the Pioneers, while his counterpart, Dave Decker stopped 13 shots in his third win of the season.

The Ducks earned a 42-27 ground ball advantage on the day and out shot UC 45-25. Stevens took advantage of 2-of-10 extra man opportunities, while the Pioneers went 0-for-6.
UC returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Baltimore, MD to take on Vassar College. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. at a neutral site.
