#15 Doug Herring BOX SCORE Utica, NY-
Doug Herring (Poughkeepsie/Poughkeepsie) tallied 15 points to lead the Utica College men’s basketball team to a
69-46 Empire 8 Conference victory over Elmira College Friday night.
With the victory UC improves their record to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the Empire 8 conference. With the loss Elmira falls to a 2-7 overall and 0-4 in the Empire 8 conference.
The Pioneers took advantage of Elmira’s zone defense in the early goings and jumped out to a 14-7 lead. Elmira hung tough and was able to work the score to 17-16 in favor of Utica.
With 10:15 left in the first half Herring stole the ball and took it to the hoop for a dunk, on the following possession
Patrick Goodman (Whitesboro/Marcy) knocked down a three pointer which capped a quick five point run by the Pioneers resulting in an Elmira timeout with the score 24-15.
Mid way through the first half Utica turned up the defense and was able to work the score up to 31-19 and giving them their biggest lead of the half. Elmira freshman Evan Taylor (Lely/Naples, FL) knocked down a few timely 3-point shots to keep the Soaring Eagles within striking distance. The Pioneers fought the Soaring Eagles off and were able to go into half time with a 37-26 lead.
Utica College started the second half on a 13-3 run as UC looked to push the tempo as the Pioneer lead grew to 50-29. The defensive pressure continued as senior
Dennis Munch (West Babylon/West Babylon) stole the ball with 8:30 to go and found junior
Justin Maxwell (Guilderland/Schenectady) for a break away lay up increasing the Pioneer lead to 25 points. Utica College continued to pour it on as they were able to cruise to a 69-46 victory.
Topping the books for the Pioneers was Doug Herring with 15 points followed by freshmen
Will Abrams (Rutgers Prep School/Somerset, NJ) and
James Patterson (Poughkeepsie/Poughkeepsie) with 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
Leading the way for the Soaring Eagles was Evan Taylor with 11 points.
