BOX SCORE

UTICA, NY – Tournament Most Outstanding Player Doug Herring and all-tournament selection James McClendon each scored 18 points to lead the Utica College Pioneers to a 75-66 win over SUNYIT in the championship game of the 2007 Wildcat Tip-Off Tournament.

With Utica clinging to a one-point 63-62 lead, the Pioneers closed out the last 3:54 of the game with a 12-4 run to earn the victory.

The game was tight throughout as neither team could muster more than a six-point lead the entire game until the final four minutes.

McClendon made it 65-62 with a layup at the 3:54 mark, and Herring took advantage of a Wildcat turnover and converted a layup to give the Pioneers a five-point advantage 15 seconds later.

SUNYIT pushed the ball up the floor, but guard Maceo Haynesworth (Hartsville, S.C./Alfred State) could not get his layup to fall which would have cut the deficit to three. Instead, James Patterson nailed a three-pointer on the Pioneers’ subsequent possession to give Utica its biggest lead to that point. The Cats, who move to 1-1 on the season, could get no closer.

Haynesworth finished the contest with a game-high 21 points. He also finished with 21 in yesterday’s win over Canton. He earned all-tournament honors for his efforts. Teammate Ajani Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) finished with 13 points and eight boards. He joined Haynesworth on the all-tournament team.

In the consolation game, James Morrison scored 19 points and Byron Jones had 18 to lead SUNY Canton to a 73-68 win over Paul Smith’s.

Paul Dudek paced the Bobcats with a team-high 18 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.

Both Jones and Dudek were named to the all-tournament team.
