UTICA, N.Y. – The Utica College women’s volleyball team defeated visiting Cazenovia College 3-0 (30-24, 30-27, 30-28) Wednesday night at the Clark Athletic Center.

The Pioneers improve to 1-4 on the year, while Cazenovia drops to 1-4. The Pioneers looked sharp in the victory and shut out Cazenovia for the second time in as many years. UC defeated the Wildcats 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-24) and 3-2 (30-20, 30-26, 28-30, 21-30, 15-13) in 2006.

Karen Crisanti (Geneva/Geneva) led all Pioneers with 10 kills and 23 digs, while Andrea Dekker (Reeths-Puffer/Muskegon, MI) posted seven kills, two service aces and 16 digs. Freshman setter Kaitlin Farruggia (Mt. Markham/Leonardsville) tied a career-high with 32 assists and she also posted three kills and one service ace.

Sophomore outside hitter Brielle Swerdlin (W. Morris Mendham/Chester, NJ) tallied five kills, two service aces and 12 digs for UC. Mereoni Vunibobo (Cathedral/Jamaica) blocked two shots in the middle and tallied three kills, while freshman Heather Jackson (John Stark/Weare, NH) tallied a career-high four kills on the evening. Sophomore outside hitter Melissa Austin (Beaver River/Castorland) tallied four kills and two service aces.

UC returns to action Saturday at host SUNYIT where they will take on the Wildcats and Keuka College.
