UTICA, NY – Senior forward Nick Callahan (Stillwater/Stillwater) netted a career-high five goals as the Utica College men’s soccer team defeated visiting Potsdam St. 8-0 in non-conference action Wednesday.

The Pioneers, who tied Potsdam 1-1 last season, improved to 2-1 this year after out shooting the Bears 22-7.

Junior midfielder Dan Ball (Maine-Endwell/Endwell) opened the scoring less than thirty seconds into the game when Callahan hit him in stride in the open field. Ball beat one defender and chipped the ball over Potsdam goalie Tyler Lattimore (Gansevoort/South High) to give UC a 1-0 lead.

Callahan took over from that point netting five consecutive goals for UC over the next 70:22 of play. Ball returned the favor assisting Callahan on his first goal, while Jared Tunkel (W.T. Clarke/East Meadow) assisted on his fifth and final goal. Headed into the contest Callahan had just six career goals in three previous seasons.

Freshman David Garcia (Fairport/Fairport) received an Evan Dufault (Sutton/Sutton, MA) pass and beat Lattimore top shelf to give UC a 7-0 lead in the seventy second minute. Robert Stevens (Whitesboro/Whitesboro) closed out the scoring for the Pioneers knocking home a free ball that bounced over the goalies head with less than seventeen minutes left in the contest.
Senior goalie Andrew Miller (Clinton/Clinton) made two stops in route to his second shut out of the season, while freshman back-up Kevin Murphy (West Islip/West Islip) stopped three shots in his collegiate debut. Lattimore made four saves in net for the Bears.

UC returns to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting Hobart College, while the Bears (1-1) take on visiting SUNY Canton Sunday at 12 p.m.
