Utica, NY – The Utica College baseball team went 0-4 against visiting Ithaca College in Empire 8 Conference action this weekend. The Pioneers lost 12-7 and 29-1 in a double header Saturday followed by10-3 and 6-0 losses in a double header Sunday at the Utica College baseball field.

The Pioneers dropped to 4-11 on the season and 0-6 in the Empire 8, while the Bombers improved to 16-8 overall and 7-1 in conference, good for first place in the E8.

Senior catcher Geoff Stewart (Whitesboro/Marcy), who is batting a team-best .349 this season, led the way for the struggling Pioneer hitters. He went 4-for-10 in four games this weekend, including three doubles in a 12-7 loss to the Bombers on Saturday. His .700 slugging percentage was best on the team and he also tallied three RBI in four games. Senior infielder John Tine (Whitesboro/Utica) went 4-for-12 with four RBI and two doubles in four UC loses, while lead-off hitter Richard Hamlin (Cicero North Syracuse/Cicero) recorded a team-high five hits and three runs scored.

The UC pitching staff struggled against the Bombers allowing a combined 46 earned runs in four games. Joe Hillman (Slate Hill/Slate Hill), Mike Sadallah (New Hartford/New Hartford), Matt O’Brien (Marcellus/Marcellus), and Corey Rando (Vestal/Vestal) all made solid appearances on the hill. Hillman, a freshman left-hander, gave up one earned run in 2 and 1/3 innings of relief work, while O’Brien made three appearances in four games and gave up just three runs. Rando and Sadallah started games three and four on Sunday and posted strong performances. Sadallah, a sophomore lefty, struck out two and allowed just six hits in five innings of work. Rando gave up seven earned runs in seven innings of work, while striking out a team-high three batters.

UC returns to action at host St. Lawrence Tuesday in non-conference action. Game one starts at 6 p.m.
