#85 James Proniewych UTICA, N.Y. – The Utica College football team lost to host Husson College 21-7 Saturday afternoon in Bangor, ME, marking the Pioneers first loss to the Eagles in program-history.
Both defenses held their ground in the first quarter and eight punts between the two teams highlight the opening fifteen minutes. Husson took a 7-0 lead with just 1:26 remaining in the first half as quarterback David Chase connected with Andre Wildman for a 37-yard touchdown reception.
The Pioneers responded in the third quarter when Nick Martin (RFA/Rome) connected with James Proniewych (Pat-Med/Medford) on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Martin finished the evening with 127 yards on 17 completions with one touchdown and three interceptions, while Proniewych caught three passes for a team-high 33 yards.
The Pioneers offense would not find the end zone again for the rest of the game and was held to just 208 yards of total offense compared to the Eagles 259. Utica freshman running back Kamaal Mabry (Goshen/Goshen) carried the ball 22 times for 51 yards, while Cody Elliot (John F. Kennedy/Sloan) caught three passes for 15 yards.
Jeremy shore caught a five yard touchdown pass from Chase to give Husson a 14-7 lead late in the third quarter. Utica free safety Marcus Maroney (Lockport/Utica) provided a spark on the defensive side of the ball as the Pioneers trailed by seven midway through the fourth quarter. Maroney picked off Chase and returned it to the Husson 27 yard line, but the Pioneers offense could not capitalize. Maroney tallied eight tackles, while Cory Jure (Sheepshead Bay/Brooklyn) and Adam Keller (RFA/Lee Center) each tallied a team-high 11 tackles. Keller recorded three and a half tackles for a loss of six yards.
Ben Atwood (VVS/Verona) punted seven times for an average of 36.4 yards per punt, while kicker Mike Blanchfield (Cambridge/Hoosick Falls) had a field goal attempt blocked with seven seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Utica (1-1) celebrates homecoming next Saturday as they take on visiting R.P.I. at 1:30 p.m.
