Message from the Utica College 2008 V-Day Committee

Valentine's Day has come and gone, but at UC, V-Day approaches! You may have seen the flyers, or bought goodies at our bake sale - the 2008 Utica College benefit production of the Vagina Monologues is being presented the weekend of March 8th and 9th! The V-Day Committee of Utica College, comprised of students from a variety of backgrounds and organizations, is proud to invite you, your friends and your colleagues to this year's performances, the seventh year that Utica College has participated in the V-Day Campaign.

This year, the 10 anniversary of the V-Day Initiative, we have the opportunity to perform a very special second set of monologues, entitled A Monologue, A Memory, A Rant and A Prayer, written by men and women and including some of the men in our community in the performance! See the schedule below for information about these performances, which will take place the weekend of February 23rd. V-Day merchandise will be sold at all productions, and the beneficiary of any proceeds will be the YWCA Hall House, a local shelter for women leaving abusive relationships.

Below is information about V-Day, the College Campaign, the Vagina Monologues, and related programs. The cast and the V-Day Committee are excited to have this opportunity to participate in an international effort to combat violence again women and girls as well as to present a moving and powerful set of monologues to the Utica College community.

If you have any questions, please contact Gabrielle Hudson at huds5642@utica.edu, Lael Pierce at pier7648@utica.edu, or Alane Varga at avarga@utica.edu or ext. 3100.

ABOUT VDAY

V-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues.

In 2007, more than 3000 V-Day events took place in the U.S. and around the world. To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $45 million and educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it, crafted international educational, media and PSA campaigns, launched the Karama program in the Middle East, reopened shelters, and funded over 5000 community-based anti-violence programs as well as safe houses in Kenya, South Dakota, Egypt and Iraq. In June 2006, V-Day launched the UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS: NYC festival which invited thousands of New Yorkers to stand up and join V-Day in making New York City the safest place on earth for women and girls.

The V-Day movement is growing at a rapid pace throughout the world, in 112 countries from Europe to Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, and all of North America. V-Day, a non-profit corporation, distributes funds to grassroots, national and international organizations and programs that work to stop violence against women and girls. In 2001, V-Day was named one of Worth Magazine's "100 Best Charities" and in 2006 one of Marie Claire Magazine’s Top Ten Charities. For more information, see the V Day website at: http://www.vday.org

V-Day’s 2008 Spotlight Campaign focuses on the Women of New Orleans. These women have come to symbolize the universal plight of women in conflict zones-- high levels of violence; economic hardship; racism; and public structures that failed to protect them. Katrina Warriors also highlight the dire need for resources to this still devastated community. Through the 2008 V-Day Spotlight Campaign on the Women of New Orleans thousands of women and men throughout the world will be exposed to the issues facing women in New Orleans. The Spotlight Campaign will raise funds to ensure lasting impact on the ground. The disbursement of funds will be determined by the needs of women in New Orleans and will be directed toward sustainable, long-term projects that will have maximum impact and fuel growth for women in businesses.

What is the College Campaign? The V-Day College Campaign strives to empower women to find their collective voices and demand an end to the epidemic levels of violence and abuse on their campuses, in their communities and around the world. Through benefit productions of “The Vagina Monologues” on or around V-Day (February 14th) they raise money and awareness to stop violence against women and girls. The proceeds from these events are donated directly to local organizations in the community that are working to stop this violence.

ABOUT THE MONOLOGUES

What is A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer?

A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer is a groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights, edited by Eve Ensler and Mollie Doyle and commissioned by V-Day for the first V-Day: UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS festival, which took place June 2006 in New York City. Beyond the time constraint of five minutes or less and the theme of women and violence, each monologue was for the writer to realize. No constructs, restrictions, or rules. A fantasy of a world where there is no violence. A poem about the physics of a slap. A memory. These writings are inspired, funny, angry, heartfelt, tragic, and beautiful. Together they create a true and profound portrait of how violence against women affects every one of us. A MEMORY, A MONOLOGUE, A RANT, AND A PRAYER is a call to the world to demand an end to violence against women.

Contributing writers include Edward Albee; Tariq Ali; Hanan al-Shaykh; Erin Cressida Wilson; Kimberlé Crenshaw; Michael Cunningham; Ariel Dorfman; Edwidge Danticat; Michael Eric Dyson; Eve Ensler; Jane Fonda; Carol Gilligan; Suheir Hammad; Carol Kaplan; Michael Klein; Deborah Copaken Kagan; Nicholas Kristof; Mark Matousek; Susan Miller; Susan Minot; Robin Morgan; Kathy Najimy; Lynn Nottage; Anna Deavere Smith; Alice Walker; Jody Williams; and Howard Zinn.

What are “The Vagina Monologues”?

Hailed by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant" and by the Daily News as "intelligent" and "courageous," “The Vagina Monologues,” which was first performed off-Broadway by Ms. Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women’s experiences. Ms. Ensler has performed the play to great acclaim throughout the world, from Zagreb to Santa Barbara, from London to Seattle, from Jerusalem to Oklahoma City. Villard Books/Random House first published “The Vagina Monologues,” which includes a foreword by Gloria Steinem, in February 1998. A special V-Day edition of the play was released in February 2001.
