As I’ve talked about before, college is a place where you meet new people and create many experiences with those new people. But then there are breaks and we go back to our real home with people we have known most of our lives, but sometimes you’re leaving someone who you’re with everyday. A long distance relationship is very difficult, whether it is a partner or even just a best friend. We spend all of our time with them at college and then are expected to be able to last without them for weeks on end. Sometimes you go home and you feel as if something is missing. Thank goodness we live in an era where technology is so advanced and we have tools like FaceTime and Skype so we are able to still connect with friends and loved ones. It’s the relationships that are stretched and tugged on during breaks. This is the time in the relationship where you learn to trust. It’s the time where you have to learn to be without them and it becomes difficult. Many become worried or anxious and others; they become lost. In the end it’s the college break that really shows your strengths and weaknesses as a couple.
I will admit I binge watch many shows, including One Tree Hill. One day I was watching, and this phrase came along and as stuck with me. I find it beautiful and truthful and explains that happiness takes a toll on people but in the end creates the most worthwhile feeling. The character Peyton Sawyer stated, “Yes, losing your heart`s desire is tragic. But gaining your heart’s desire? That’s all you can hope for. This year I wished for love… to immerse myself in someone else and to wake a heart long afraid to feel. My wish was granted. And if having that is tragic, then give me that tragedy. Because I wouldn’t give it back for the world.”
This quote really comes into play for long distance relationships. You may meet someone at college, like I did, who really becomes your everything. But it took some lows to get to that one person. Or you may realize that the school breaks show your weaknesses but when you’re together with that person it proves that you and your partner can get through many other obstacles.
College is a part of my life where I met someone who means the world to me. I now sit here during the winter break missing that one person but being so excited to be embraced into their arms the day break is over. Long distance relationships are about being patient, having trust and understanding each other’s feelings.
