Did Cinderella Ever Get Her Slipper? Nope!

Earlier this month, I attended the UC Performing Arts’ production of “Cinderella Waltz.” (Some of you may remember from my last post). I knew that I wasn’t about to see an average, Happily-Ever-After fairytale, but the great acting and quirky characters had the entire audience laughing and having a great time.

The basis of the play was Rosey Snow (Cinderella) lives at home with her Step Mother, Father and two Step Sisters – one who hates the world and only smiles once in the whole show and one who didn’t stop smiling, laughing, giggling or flirting! Through a series of quirky events, the Step Mother forces the Prince to give them 3 tickets for his royal ball where he is to find a wife.

My favorite part of the production was when ever the Fairy Godmother (I’m pretty sure she had a Boston accent) would come from the water well, the lights would get turned down, disco music would play and a disco light would shine! This proved to be very humorous during serious or intense scenes!

In the end, the Prince DOES NOT fall in love with Rosey Snow! She didn’t even try on her glass slipper…she threw it down the well! Here are the “relationship” outcomes of the play….the Prince falls in love with the angry Step Sister…I did not see that one coming! The other Step Sister falls in love with a Troll. As for Rosey Snow, she falls in love with the Village Idiot who turns out not to be an idiot. Hope I didn’t lose anyone while explaining those crazy love triangles!

During my theatre class the following week, I was able to climb inside the well and see how they snuck people in and out of it!

Overall, I really enjoyed the show, but if you went expecting the traditional tale of Cinderella and how she met her Prince Charming…you were quickly awoken! I can’t wait to see what the theatre group performs next!

How To Survive With No Sleep.

Going to college means having a workload waaaaaaaaaaaaay more intense than what you may be used to. Between homework, projects, studying for tests, and reviewing your notes, classes take up a huge chunk of time. Plus, you probably have a job, and a social life. …So sleep doesn’t really factor into the mix all of the time.

Running on little-to-no sleep is hard. …but not impossible. (Just be sure to not do this all the time. Reserve it for those crunch times during the semester.)

Stay Away From Caffeine

I know, counter-intuitive. But, hear me out. Caffeine causes a “jolt” in your body, but soon after you’re going to crash. And you’ll be worse than you were before. If you must, only have a cup of coffee, or one energy drink; don’t guzzle them down.

(If I’m advocating against coffee then you know I mean it…as evidenced by my affinity for coffee…and taking pictures of myself while drinking it.)

Stay away from carbs, focus on proteins.

Chips, pretzels, bread, and all those other carb-ladden foods cause a spike in blood sugar…which then may cause drowsiness to set in. Try to eat proteins such as nuts, peanut butter, and cottage cheese. Try to eat throughout the day, and not have huge meals.

(Peanut butter is a good high protein food to eat when tired.)

http://sleepyti.me/ This website is pretty cool. You can use it to calculate when you should wake up in order to get the most efficiency out of your rest time. (It calculates the average human REM cycles and then gives you suggested times to wake up when you are least likely to interrupt a cycle) I’m not actually sure if it works, but I always feel more refreshed after I use it…so give it a try, who knows?

Remember, any sleep is better than no sleep. Pulling all-nighters is actually super bad for you though, so I don’t recommend it.

So, next time you’re exhausted check yourself and try to do these things, they’ll totally help.

 

 

Long Hair/Short Hair – Who Cares?

Being a young adult in college means trying to figure out who the heck you are, inside and out. You’re trying to find a personal style and nail down what makes you, you. Plus, you’re trying desperately to distance yourself from the frizzy-haired, braces-wearing awkward teen you were in high school. That means you’re experimenting with new choices, whether it be clothes, make-up, fitness, or hair.

When I wanted to cut my hair, someone very close to me vehemently urged me against it, telling me quite frankly how ugly and unfeminine I would look if I did. It had nothing to do with how the actual cut would look on me, but was merely because the person telling me this thought all females look bad with short hair.

Spoiler alert: I cut it anyway and received more compliments on my hair than I have in my entire life. I had a new found confidence and freedom, a sophisticated look that better suited my personality.

The initial skeptic still wasn’t happy, and I of course encountered others opposed to the look. They couldn’t believe I chopped off my “beautiful long hair,” and seemed personally offended by the choice, like how dare I make a decision about my appearance without their approval? The nerve I had to choose short hair when others would’ve killed for my long hair.Fall '138

Here’s the deal with all the hair haters: it’s none of anyone’s business what I, or anyone else, decides to do with their hair. Short hair might not be your favorite thing, but that doesn’t mean somebody with a shorter cut is any less beautiful for choosing it. And maybe you wouldn’t want long hair that dangles all the way down to your butt, but some people do, and they like it that way.

There’s no need to judge someone on the street because they dyed their hair a hundred hues of pink, purple, and green. People are so quick to cry, “How unprofessional!” Or “What was he/she thinking?” I’ll tell you what they were thinking: this is something I want to do, and I’m going to do it for me. Their personality is not suddenly less mature or professional because their hair color changed. I mean, think about that for a second. Some people just love to experiment, and maybe those against it are just envious that they don’t have the guts to do so too.

On a similar note, if somebody wants to do absolutely nothing with their hair for their entire life, that’s totally cool too. There’s no law that says you have to constantly chop and color according to the latest trend.

We’re in 2014 now, and an ultra-short cut doesn’t have to be any less feminine than long locks on a chick; nor does flowing hair on a guy need to be less manly than a buzz cut. Sometimes, the other extreme fits your lifestyle better, and that’s what your choice should be about, not gender norms. I workout and sweat everyday, so short hair’s a breeze for me, plus it suits the shape of my face. Another girl might prefer long hair she can constantly style differently.

Guys, it’s hair. It grows, it changes, and mostly, it just hangs there. Do what you want with it, whatever makes you feel beautiful, and don’t let anyone else make you feel any less so.

Feeling Tired – Try Improving the Quality of your Sleep

We all know that sleep is very important for our health and well-being, not to mention just functioning well during the day. I’m personally pretty serious about getting my 8 hours every night so I can be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for the next day, and ready to be at the top of my game.

Yet, I noticed that even though I was getting enough sleep I was still tired when I got up, and I stayed tired for most of the day until I climbed back into bed. As college students we aren’t known for keeping the most regular sleep schedule, and sometimes that paper you’re working on at the last minute keeps you up into the wee hours of the morning. However, that tired feeling you have during the day may not be because you aren’t getting enough sleep. Rather, you may not be getting the quality sleep your body needs to recharge. After scouring the internet I’ve found some tips you can employ to avoid being a walking zombie during the day.

Create the proper environment for sleeping. This entails changing a few habits you may have picked up over the years. Experts recommend that you keep the room as dark as possible. This means dimming your digital clocks, turning off the TV, and getting rid of that night-light (not that you still use those). Light is a powerful cue to your brain that you need to wake up, which of course is counter-productive to sleep. Likewise, try to eliminate the most noise possible. You may feel that music helps you relax but it may be placing undue strain on your body during sleep. If you need to listen to something try using a white noise app on your phone to drown out any sounds that may wake you up during the night. Additionally, it is recommended that you keep your bedroom a few degrees colder than you would normally have it during the day, preferably between 60°-75°F, as this helps prevent your internal clock from waking you up unnecessarily during the night. If you have pets, try to prevent them from being in the room if they tend to wake you up. Some even recommend removing electronics from you bedroom entirely, for those in a dorm this may be more a little more difficult. However, the stronger association you can create with your bedroom as a place designated solely for sleep, the  better sleep you will get.

Set a routine. This goes beyond just going to bed and waking up at the same time. Try to establish a relaxing routine that you perform for about a hour before bed. You might get comfortable in bed and read a book, or any other activity you find relaxing. Avoid working and talking about stressful situations, when stressed the brain secretes a chemical called cortisol that promotes alertness, which is counter-productive to relaxation. That being said, establishing a set time for going to bed and waking up is still important. Practicing this type of control helps set your internal clock. However, it may be difficult to get to bed at the same time every night; so your best bet is to establish a set time every morning to wake up. This practice helps to set your internal clock, which in turn allows your body to consolidate sleep better. This means that even if you don’t get a good night’s sleep, your body will make up for it the next night. The most important thing is that you try your best not to deviate from your routine.

Keep Calm. We’ve all been in that situation where all we want to do is fall asleep, but we can’t. This is likely because your trying to hard, and that can lead to stress that will keep you awake. If you can’t fall asleep after about 20 minutes, don’t force it. Try getting up and doing something relaxing for a while in a low-light setting. Once you start feeling tired and your body is ready to sleep, you can return to bed. Likewise, avoid watching the clock; nothing is worse and more stressful than trying to fall asleep with the clock staring you in the face, mocking your inability to fall asleep. Try turning the clock face away from you, or dimming the screen so you can’t read it. Not only will this help you fall asleep faster, but you will be less tempted to check the clock if you wake up in the middle of the night.

Avoid foods and activities that keep you awake. This may seem obvious, but just about everyone is guilty of doing this every once and a while. It should go without saying that your worst enemy is caffeine. This means trying to cut out coffee, soda, and even chocolate for about 4 hours before bed. Likewise, be careful when snacking late at night, it’s okay to eat something light if your hungry. But, that double bean burrito or slice of supreme pizza is asking for trouble with indigestion and insomnia. You should also try to avoid exercising too close to bed, exercise produces cortisol, which interferes with sleep. Try not to exercise within 3-4 hours of going to sleep. Also, try to balance your fluid intake, drink enough so that you don’t wake up thirsty in the middle of the night; and I’m sure I don’t need to warn you about what drinking too much liquid will do. Lastly, control your napping habits. Hopefully, you won’t need to nap if these tips are working; but if you do need a nap, the timing is crucial. Try to nap about midday for 20-30 minutes at most, this will give the boost you need the make it through the rest of the day, but it won’t ruin your sleep schedule.

I’ve tried a few of these ideas myself, and I’ve seen some improvement in the way I feel during the day. At the very least, you might trick yourself into sleeping better just by thinking positively. What do you do to relax after a hard day?

Quick Facts About Being an RA

For the past two years I have been apart of a great leadership opportunity here at Utica College: being a Resident Assistant. During my first year I never contemplated the idea of becoming an RA, the idea of being in charge of two dozen people and creating events every month seemed like a lot of work to me. But during the Fall semester of my second year something amazing happened, the residence life department ran out of alternative RAs and a position opened up so they were scrambling to fill the position as quickly as possible. A few of the Area Coordinators met and through out names of student leaders on campus that could be a good fit for the position and my name came up. I received an email to come meet with the staff about the position. When I read the email, I did not know what to do. Did I really want to do this? I don’t really know all the duties of an RA so I guess I should at least go find out. So, I went to the interview. After the interview, I was hired and I do not regret that decision at all. I love being an RA. I get to meet so many individuals and create so many bonds with my residence on my floor and other people who live in the residence hall. Besides that, I get to see my residence grow and I get to be apart of the welcoming atmosphere of Utica College. I would suggest anyone to apply and become a student leader.

Now, I would like to take a moment to tell you some facts about being an RA:

1) Not every student is going to appreciate the things you do for them, and sometimes they will judge you unfairly.

As much as we would like to be appreciated and on friendly terms with each and every resident, that is an unrealistic vision. People in the halls may not like you. People in your own community may not like you. These views may have nothing to do with you personally, but the role you have as a student authority figure. Being a Resident Assistant puts you in a position to not be liked. Be fair, kind, and caring towards others, and you will find that the majority of residents will respect and care about you in return.

2) Do events that the residents want to do.

The only want to get your residence to come to your events is to do events that interest them. If your residence do not want to go to the museums but instead would rather go play laser tag, well, you better put in a proposal for laser tag. You will have a better turn out, and your residents will appreciate that you are doing things that they want to do. If you don’t know what your residence want to do, then ASK THEM. Take 20 minutes out of your day and go to each room on your floor and ask your residence what things they would like to do. Remind them that the events are free.

3) Be clever with your advertisements

It is very hard to get residence to go to educational events, so, put up flyers that are clever and make the residents think the event is about something else than it actually is. For example, if you are going to teach your residents about planting, put up a flyer that reads “Pot Party.” What do you think the residence will think the event is about? To get good turn outs you have to be creative!!

4) Make connections with your residences

The only way to make your residence respect you is to talk to them. It may not seem like they care, but talking to your residences once in a while allows them to feel comfortable with you and you will see that they will respect you more when you have to write them up for breaking the rules…

So even through the hours of training, piles of paperwork, numerous meetings, lock outs at 4 in the morning and the stress of busting underage parties in the residence halls; being an RA has been a great part of my college experience, this position has allowed me to grow as a student leader.

Adapting to change

For some, the thought of leaving home and going to a place that one may not be familiar with can sound pretty intimidating. At least it did to me when I prepared to leave for college. Being from New York City, I am use to the fast paced lifestyle New Yorkers live everyday. I took public transportation to travel to school everyday with working people, people entertaining subway riders for donations, and other students. That all changed when I graduated high school and came to Utica College. My first time on the campus was during new student orientation and all I could think was, “how will I get use to this?” I did not have the answers then, however, I figured it out as time went by.

I didn’t look at the change as it being inconvenient. I instead looked at it as starting a new chapter in my life. I was living in a place that I never thought I would see myself in, and there were so many great people around I was anxious to mix and mingle with. Within weeks I had become familiar with the campus and its surroundings, and I then began to accept it. When I went home for long breaks like Christmas break or summer vacation, I would anticipate coming back to school after a while. I noticed I begin to enjoy the slower pace of Utica that I did not know anything about before. I begin to appreciate the large open space, the plants, the clouds that look like they are within arms reach, the trees, the silence at night, etc. I realized later being on campus felt like a vacation away from the city.

Now as a senior, I’ve become accustomed with the lifestyle here in Utica and I learned to appreciate it. On top of that, there are several people on campus who are from the city who struggle with the same issues. The answer to getting over the change is talking to different people and making many connections as possible. This way students can attend events together, join organizations, and give each other advice about adapting to the change and how to feel, “at home.” Team work makes the dream work!

5 Tips to adapt to change away from home:

1. Don’t look at it as an inconvience. Look at it as a learning experience.

2. Connect with several people. The more the better. If you meet someone who lives close by or in the upstate area, it’s possible they can introduce you to new activities or even show you the fun things available to do.

3. Stop for a moment and take in the beauty of the campus. It will make you appreciate the pace of things and nature around us.

4. Have an open mind. If you’re open about meeting people, attending events, and trying new things you won’t get bored and become homesick, eventually missing the things you were use to back at home.

5. Don’t be afraid to come out of your comfort zone. You may try something you never tried before and end up really enjoying it, or graduate college with a diverse group of friends.

Human Bowling @ UC and Tips to make your event a success

Today one of my organizations, Alpha Phi Omega Petitioning Group held a fundraiser event to raise funds for the March of Dimes Foundation. The event was human bowling where students get into a metal cage sitting down and are rolled and knock down cloth bowling pins. It was sponsored in part by Student Senate so it was completely free for UC students but there was a suggested donation of $2. Lots of people showed up and participated and donated some even donated without participating. Although there was tons of mud out there it didn’t stop us! We got dirty and had a great time for a great cause!

Event planning isn’t always easy but here are some tips to a successful event:

  1. Do your research early- Months in advance you need to know exactly what you’re doing, where it will be, what date and time, and how much will it cost. A good way to is to talk to your peers on campus to see what they want here at our school. An alternative to that is to check out what neighboring schools had on their campus and if we can make it a success here. It never hurts to try new or unusual things.Human Bowling
  2. Use all your resources! - Human Bowling was funded by Student Senate. When planning your event consider presenting to the Finance Committee to request funding from Senate. That’s one of the many reasons it is there!  Get together with another on campus organization and make it a collaboration. Some orgs have their own specialty, if you do an event with WPNR they can play the music for the event or PRSSA could be in charge of publicity.  If you don’t qualify for the funding by the Finance Committee by laws, reach out to orgs on campus that may have a budget like, the Utica College Programming Board or the Inter-Greek Council.
  3. Communicate- Whether it be with people in your organization or the Director of Student Activities make sure you are communicating well so everyone understand what is going on and what’s their part. So make sure all your locations are booked and you have attended any meetings required. If you are not sure about something…ASK! It makes it a lot hard on yourself when you assume things. Don’t forget your manners either, thank everyone who helped you out. Thank you cards are really nice touch and it leaves a great impression about your org on someone.

  4. PROMOTE! - Get the word out there! There areso many FREE methods on campus to spread the word:
    • Put it in the DaySheet
    • Submit and ad request to WPNR and have it on the air
    • Paper flyers are good for the wall but try e-flyers…  take it a step further create custom invites and send them via email
    • Use social media, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter are all big right now take advantage
    • Have each member of your org tell a new person – a great way to meet people and get the word out
    • You could even take an ad out in the Tangerine (this one cost money)

     

  5. HAVE FUN!!- The public will feed off your energy, if you look like you aren’t having fun they won’t either. You put so much hard work into why wouldn’t you have fun!

Coming back from spring break? 5 Tips for getting back to normal

Coming back from spring break is always tough. You just had a week off of no school, exams, or any other obligations pertaining to work. Most of us either cry on our way back or some may be too busy trying to get assignments done. Here are 5 easy tips you can use to get back to normal after spring break. By normal I  mean: stressing over exams, cramming, pulling all nighters and waking up for those 8:30 classes.

Tip 1: Go to bed earlier than usual.The day before your first day back ( which is usually a Sunday).  Do not stay up and watch t.v and try to avoid leaving your assignments for that night. This will  ensure that you rest for your first day back so even if its tough, you will be able to manage.

Tip 2: Eat a good breakfast your first day back. I am for one am not a breakfast person, however eating an healthy breakfast improves your chances of staying awake in class and decreases headaches throughout the day.

Tip 3: Organize yourself. After your first week back, you feel as though you have been ran over by a car, so you tend to sleep in that first weekend back. Find time to organize your self. Now that you have had all your classes, go through  the syllabus for each class and write out ( or maybe even type up) a schedule for the remaining of the semester, that way you know what you are up against. This gives you the ability to plan things out so that you don’t get overwhelmed with due dates.

Tip 4: Group studying. Dont be afraid to ask for help, you are not the only person failing a class or having a hard time adjusting back to school. In the library you can request study rooms. Request a room and invite some friends or classmates to study. You guys can feed off of each others energy while still studying and it will help you feel more relaxed that your not alone in this situation.

Tip 5. Relax!!!! This is big one. Find some relaxing time for your self, go to a zumba class, (Which is offered at Utica) or even the gym. Find time for yourself because you will be stressed out especially at this time of the year. Even changing your room around can help you feel refresh and motivated.

7 LETTER WORD

Ok so i have a question for you. what 7 letter word is essential to a great college career ? … can’t get it ? or maybe you think you have it. well the answer is BALANCE. Balance is so important in college for multiple reasons. Balance does exactly what its meaning says and thats keep you up right so you don’t fall down. College can get really frustrating with all the amount of work that you have to do , if you play a sport the endless meetings and hours in the weight room and lastly we can’t forget down time i mean we live for the down time at college thats when all the magic happens , its the one time when we get to experience college life and all the cool things that come with being a college student. Now with all those things being said it can sometimes be hard to keep yourself leveled to make sure that you are taking care of everything that is needed and at the same time having funny. This is where most people find themselves in trouble when they go away for college. They lose their Balance and everything starts to crumble , their homework starts to become late or not done at all and partying starts to take over their lives. This is were having the ability and know how to balance all of the things that are on your plate comes in handy. On my next blog i will list some steps more like helpful tips that you can use to create a base foundation for your own balance so you can stay on track and still enjoy college life. Just always remember that theirs a time for everything but make sure that its the right time for it.

Cold Weather Blues?

sad-snowman  Spring is officially here, but for central New York, it does not feel that way. The high today was 25 degrees with a low of 4 degrees, plus wind and I even spotted flurries! After months of walking to classes, the cafe, and many other places; its easy to see how students can feel less motivated and even depressed at times. So how can we stay positive and motivated?

1. Go to the gym for about an hour and work out or even play! It is proven that excercise releases endorphins that can give you that “feel good” feeling. At the athletic center you do not just have to go lift weights, there are many other opportunities available such as: open swim hours, racquetball, basketball, open gym, volleyball, intramural sports and you can even sign out the dance room and just dance around or do yoga! There are so many different things for everyone, even if you don’t do sports (like me)!

2. Remember to eat healthy!! A big factor in mental health and feeling positive, actually comes from your diet. Yes those processed foods and big bowl of ice cream are tasty, but they are not filled with the nutrients your body needs and therefore can lead to energy loss and changes in mood. So just try to remember the food pyramid. You don’t need to follow it by exact and precise measures, but you should try to follow it as much as possible.

The dorms have free pool tables and even games you can sign out to play.

Check out Five Below and you can get cheap gag toys, activities and games to enjoy with your friends.

Bring back old childhood board games! Or even adult board games!

Have a card night with your friends!

Have WII, Xbox and/or other game competitions with friends or even neighbors!

And don’t forget a good ole’ movie night!

The cold weather is not the end of the world and there are many ways you can make the best of it. Just remember to stay focussed, keep busy and stay positive! The real spring time weather will be here right around the corner and you will be complaining about the heat in no time!
