Integrated Information Technology Services (IITS)
Integrated Information Technology Services (IITS) requires a standardized period of time during which servers or services are made unavailable in order to conduct necessary maintenance. Each Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the UC online course system will be offline for maintenance and backups. Each Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. IITS reserves the right to perform necessary maintenance and back ups on all other campus services as needed. The College community will be informed in advance so that users can plan for disruptions in service. Other downtime will be allocated as needed for critical security patches, hardware issues, emergencies, or unplanned events.
IITS reserves the right to modify this schedule and/or to schedule additional downtime as needed for major upgrades and other work that falls outside the purview of this policy, provided that the College community has sufficient notice and that the downtime has been approved in advance by the vice president for academic affairs, the vice president for financial affairs, or the president of the College.
All times noted in the above paragraph refer to Eastern Standard Time or Eastern Daylight Time, whichever is in effect at the time.
This policy and the procedures associated with it apply to all members of the Utica College community, including online students.
REASON FOR POLICY:
Regularly scheduled downtime helps to prevent server failures, including data loss, excessive downtime, hardware failures, unplanned outages, breaches of security, etc. It also allows IITS to perform critical and preventative maintenance. A standard scheduled downtime allows end users to plan ahead and minimize the impact of the temporary lack of service.
IITS staff will determine what service(s), if any, will be unavailable during each scheduled downtime period and will notify the College community via e-mail at least two days in advance. In the case of emergencies and unplanned downtime, the affected parties will be notified in advance whenever possible. However, IITS will be sensitive to major College events and will make every attempt to avoid scheduling downtime during these events.
No weekly notifications will be made for Wednesday and Saturday downtime of the online course system, but notices will be posted on that service and at the start of each academic term. Regularly scheduled backups will be listed on the IITS Web site (http://www.utica.edu/downtime/), but are subject to change depending upon the amount of data to be backed up.
It is the responsibility of IITS to properly notify the College community of service downtime in advance when possible. It is the responsibility of all users to plan for these downtimes.
Enforcement of Utica College policies is the responsibility of the office or offices listed in the “Resources/Questions” section of each policy. The responsible office will contact the appropriate authority regarding faculty or staff members, students, vendors, or visitors who violate policies.
Utica College acknowledges that College policies may not anticipate every possible issue that may arise. The College therefore reserves the right to make reasonable and relevant decisions regarding the enforcement of this policy. All such decisions must be approved by an officer of the College (i.e. president, vice president for academic affairs, or vice president for financial affairs).
