UC Professor to Receive Award at NAACP Event

- Jan DeAmicis, professor of sociology at Utica College, will receive the Civil Rights Advocates and Activists Award from the Utica and Oneida County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The award will be given at the 2013 Freedom Fund Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 3. 

As an advocate and activist for civil rights, DeAmicis has written several articles on local black history, on topics such as slavery, family structure, the Underground Railroad and African American history in Utica. He has also presented professional papers comparing black family structure in small N.Y. cities from 1880 to 1930.

DeAmicis earned his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, and his masters and doctorate from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A professor at Utica College since 1977, DeAmicis has also taught at several universities, including Melbourne University, Xiamen University in China, and Jagiellonian University in Poland.

The event will take place at the Radisson Hotel-Utica Center at 3:30 p.m. Awards will also be given to John Furman of Municipal Housing Authority and the Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency.
