UC students to celebrate traditions of other cultures
Utica, NY (04/18/2013)- Utica College Student Senate, The Inter Greek Council, Medical Society, Asian Student Union, The International Student Club and WPNR 90.7 FM are sponsoring Holi Festival of Colors on Friday, April 19 at 5 p.m. in the Residential Quad.
At Holi, a spectrum of all-natural colorful powders is released into the air, blanketing every participant in a vibrant rainbow, kickstarting the brief festivities to follow.
Every year, thousands of Hindus participate in the Holi Festival, the purpose of which has evolved over time. Originally, it commemorated good harvests and the fertile land. Now, it is a way of celebrating the beginning of the new spring season. Hindus believe it is a time of enjoying spring's abundant colors and saying farewell to winter. It also has a religious purpose to commemorate events in Hinduism, representing the triumph of good over bad.
