Utica, NY (04/15/2012)
- Three Utica College students in the risk management and insurance (RMI) program participated in a case study competition at Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) sixth annual RMI Conference this month in Richmond, Va.

Teams from nine universities including Howard, Illinois State, La Salle, Old Dominion, Olivet, Temple, St. Johns, VCU and Utica were given a case and six weeks to complete a paper and submit it to judges in advance of the presentations.

Senior Kyle Guestin from Kingsburg, Calif., and sophomores Doug Marshall from Garnet Valley, Pa. and Mike Slowikowski from Ewing, N.J. comprised the Utica team.

The students gave a presentation on a case study involving Coca Cola to several judges, program faculty and audience members from the industry. Their presentation earned them third place and a monetary prize of $2,000.

Pamela Hurley, Ph.D., case competition faculty advisor and Utica College assistant professor of risk management and insurance, said, “Several of the judges and audience members spoke with me after the presentation and told me how remarkable they were.”

Utica College’s RMI program, established in 2008, is relatively new compared to the top ten and top five RMI programs the school was competing against. This makes the students’ accomplishment even more special.

As a result, Hurley could not be more pleased with her students.

“The students were outstanding during both of their presentations,” said Hurley. “I am really proud of my RMI student accomplishments and enjoy working with each of them individually and collectively. They are exemplary students and are excellent representatives of the school’s RMI program.”

Competition success seems to be a trend with RMI students at UC. Last April, RMI students made it to the final round in a contest to develop an original and innovative concept for Price Chopper to use in their retail operations, supply chain management, marketing or human resources.

The college’s RMI program is oriented toward gaining an integrated perspective on the full range of risk faced by a firm, its employees, and customers or clients. UC offers an academic concentration in risk management and insurance (RMI) within its respected management major and an academic minor in risk management and insurance (RMI) for students who seek to add a high-value suite of skills to their main course of study.
