Nexus: The Utica Rescue at Judge Hayden’s Law Office

On the morning of December 29, 1836, Virginia slave-catchers brought two fugitives to the law office of Oneida County Judge Chester Hayden, at 96-98 Genesee Street. The quick action of abolitionists Spencer Kellogg and Alvan Stewart delayed the legal re-enslavement of Harry Bird and George until Hayden’s return from his duties at the Oneida County Courthouse. Meanwhile, a crowd of black men from nearby Post Street beat the slave-catchers and freed the two escaped slaves, who then escaped to freedom. The National Park Service has now designated the building at 96-98 Genesee Street as an officially recognized site of the Underground Railroad. This building now appears in the Network to Freedom’s nationwide listing of Underground Railroad sites.
