"I am proud of what UC was and even more proud of what it has become. The future is bright at UC."

John Snyder is the National Alumni Council President.  He lives in Utica with his wife and four children.

What was your major and are you working in that filed now? (What do you do you?)

I was a Political Science major, better know as government today at UC.  I am an attorney and new partner in the firm of Gitto & Niefer, LLP.  We specialize in Workers’ Compensation defense around central New York.

What attracted you to that course of study?

I knew I wanted to go to law school and that really gives you lots of options for undergraduate majors.  However, Political Science involved many courses tied into the law.  It also gave me exposure to Professor Orlin who was great preparation for law school.  However all of the professors in the department were great.

What was the best thing about Utica College?

The people.  There are so many wonderful people at UC.  I will never forget being sworn into the New York State Bar almost four years after leaving UC.  Dean Woods and Professor Orlin made the trip to Rochester for the ceremony.  Several other UC graduates were there that day as well.  That type of personal connection even after graduation is what UC is all about.

What professor or staff member made a difference in your life?

Many people made a difference but I think Professor Orlin is the one person who stands out the most.  He even brought me back to UC as an adjunct professor teaching Criminal Jurisprudence.

If you could go back to UC all over again, what would you do differently?

Nothing.  I had a great time.

Do you have any advice for students?

Get involved and have fun.  Of course you should study a little too.  College is one of the best times in life.  Take full advantage of all your opportunities.

If you could sum up what UC offers in two or three sentences, what would you say?

UC offers opportunity.  The opportunity to receive the training and experience to get you started on the road to success.

When you think of UC today, what comes to mind? What stands out the most?

All of the wonderful growth at UC is what stands out to me today.  I am proud of what UC was and even more proud of what it has become.  The future is bright at UC.
