Utica College's Inter Greek Council (IGC) has raised more than $1,300 for its holiday service project, "Adopt-A-Classroom" at Kernan Elementary School in Utica.
Utica, NY (12/15/2015)- Utica College’s Inter Greek Council (IGC) has raised more than $1,300 for its holiday service project, “Adopt-A-Classroom” at Kernan Elementary School in Utica. Members of the IGC made the trip to Kernan Elementary on Wednesday, Dec. 16,. to present the items to the school.
Initial plans called for helping one classroom, but the service project has quickly expanded and is now helping 101 first graders in four classrooms at Kernan Elementary School. The IGC has provided every first grader with a hat, scarf, socks and gloves. They also donated 12 winter coats and other warm clothing to be stored in the principal’s office at the school for any child in need. Each of the four teachers will receive a box of classroom necessities such as tissues, wipes, hand sanitizer, flash cards, crayons, pencils, note pads, puzzles and more.
The IGC is made up of eight fraternities and sororities including Theta Phi Alpha, Chi Beta Sigma, Sigma Iota Alpha, Omega Phi Beta, Alpha Chi Rho, Phi Beta Sigma, Lambda Sigma Upsilon and Alpha Phi Delta, totaling nearly 80 UC undergraduate students.
The Office of Student Activities supported the Council’s efforts by dedicating the tips from the college’s annual Holiday Dinner.
“We are so proud of Utica College’s sororities and fraternities for collaborating to give back to the community. Their hard work will bring smiles to many little faces this holiday season,” said Fran Lucia, IGC advisor.
Members of the IGC will have an opportunity to visit Kernan in January to spend some individual time with some of the first graders that they have helped.

"There is no question that my careers at GE and Rubbermaid wouldn't have worked out without the foundation that UC gave me." "I chose business as a major for the financial background it gave me. My UC degree gave me the opportunity to build my career at General Electric, where I spent 31 years, ending up as senior vice-president of corporate marketing and sales. I then went on to run Rubbermaid for six years and ended up as CEO. There is no question that the GE career and the Rubbermaid career wouldn't have worked out without the foundation that UC gave me."
