Bio/pre-med, accounting student take top honors for Class of 2014
Utica, NY (05/07/2014)- Dr. Judith Kirkpatrick, Utica College provost and vice president for academic affairs, has named Kristina Shikula as the class of 2014 valedictorian and Joshua Haar as the class of 2014 salutatorian.
Shikula, who carries a 4.0 GPA, is the daughter of Andrey and Angelika Shikula of Utica. She said she has always been interested in biology and chose Utica College because of the small class size.
“Being able to interact one-on-one with your professors is priceless,” Shikula said. She plans to attend either the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry or SUNY Upstate Medical University in August, and hopes to return to Utica one day as a family doctor.
A native of West Edmeston, NY, Haar is the son of Jonathan and Claudia Haar. He is completing his bachelor’s degree in accounting while maintaining a GPA of 4.0 as well. His plan post-graduation includes earning a joint JD/MBA and complete his CPA certification. Haar has been accepted with full scholarship to both Syracuse University and Albany Law School, and is waiting for a reply from his application to Cornell.
“Through my two years here, I have appreciated the general helpfulness of both faculty and students,” said Haar. “The academic scholarships I have received here have been invaluable and the instructors have provided and shared a wealth of experiential and academic knowledge.”
Utica College’s undergraduate commencement ceremonies will be held Sunday, May 18 at 9:30 a.m. at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. More than 600 undergraduates are eligible to participate. The keynote speaker will be Travis Roy, author and former college hockey player.
