Utica, NY (06/25/2013)- Utica College and Oriskany Central School District have announced the creation of a Professional Partnership Pilot Project.
The new clinically-rich teacher preparation program will give UC education students hands-on classroom experience as well as give Oriskany teachers opportunities to learn new skills.
The one-year pilot program, starting this fall, will allow UC students enrolled in the education program to have access to Oriskany’s new “adult learning room” located in the N.A. Walbran Elementary School. The room, fully stocked with required equipment and technology, will be the hub of the program, as well as professional development for current Oriskany teachers. The location, said Oriskany Superintendent of Schools Gregory Kelahan, will allow the school to show elementary students the importance of viewing education as a continuum, with college as the ultimate goal.
UC students will take courses taught by both UC professors and a team of four Oriskany teachers on the elementary school campus. Oriskany teachers will evaluate the techniques and skills learned by the students in the courses and will reflect on their own teaching skills through that evaluation. Oriskany teachers will be able to increase their professional skills by taking advantage of UC educational courses at no cost.
The new agreement paves a relationship between Oriskany Central Schools and UC students looking to participate in fieldwork or student teaching. Student teachers can immerse themselves in the culture of the school and become comfortable in its environment, which will allow them to receive preferential consideration for employment in the Oriskany Central School District.
The Oriskany Central School District also plans to increase and continue contributions to the Utica College scholarship fund for Oriskany High School graduates continuing their education.
Both schools plan to evaluate the program at the end of the academic year.
