Utica, NY (04/12/2006) - Utica College Project SHINE (Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders) and Health Literacy hosted a health fair today (April 12) to help immigrants learn about health care and explore cultural diversity. The MetLife Foundation SHINE/Health Literacy Initiative sponsored the event.
The health fair helps educate students in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes and citizenship classes at the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees and BOCES. These individuals viewed 30 presentations in the areas of health care, language and cultural diversity throughout the day. The day was an excellent opportunity for immigrants and UC students to interact, learning invaluable information from each other about diversity and health care. The fair was held in Hubbard Hall and the Faculty Center at the college.
The 75 refugees are from a vast array of countries across the globe including Bosnia, Belarus, China, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Iran, Morocco and Libya. Ten MetLife employees and more than 60 Utica College students assisted guests as presenters, guides, and interpreters. There were also several other interpreters available who translated Polish, Spanish, Somali, Russian and Southeast Asian.
Project SHINE is a federally-funded grant program shared by Utica College and Hamilton College. For more information about the health fair or Project SHINE, contact Linda Aaronson, health literacy coordinator, at 792-3059.
