UC Announces Science Fair Winners

Utica, NY (03/28/2006) - Utica College's 28th Annual Regional Science Fair presented by Homogeneous Metals was held Saturday at the college. The grand champions were announced at an awards banquet at the college Saturday evening. They are: senior grand champion - Maria LaGasse, grade 12, Rome Catholic School, for "Bending Spacetime in the Basement"; senior runner-up grand champion - Kendra Potasiewicz, grade 11, Poland Central School, for "Effects of Heredity on Fingerprint Ridge Characteristic in the Thumbprints of Biological Families"; junior grand champion - Luke Shields, grade 8, Clinton Middle School, for "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head: A Comparison of Water Models."In the senior division (grades 9-12), physical sciences, winners were: first place, Jana Farell, Clinton High School; second place, Faith Rickard, Poland Central School; third place, David Goodman, Whitesboro High School; and fourth place, Alexandra Armstrong, Whitesboro High School.
In the senior division, natural sciences, winners were: first place, Rohit Dhingra, New Hartford; second place, John Scibior, Notre Dame Junior-Senior High School; third place, Andrea Uvanni, Rome Free Academy; fourth place, Akhil Reddy, Perry Junior High.
In the senior division, computer/math/engineering, winners were: first place, Maria LaGasse, Rome Catholic School; second place, Kendra Potasiewicz, Poland; third place, Korey Buttenschon, Whitesboro; fourth place, Bryan Sheppard, Poland.
In the junior division (grades 7-8), physical sciences, winners were: first place, Luke Shields, Clinton; second place, Sarah Rabice and Erika Shankman, Clinton; third place, Molly Messenger and Erica Stapleton, Strough Middle School; fourth place, Andrew Bering and Derek Smith, Clinton.
In the junior division, natural sciences, winners were: first place, Joseph Stanton, Rome Catholic School; second place, Jenny Rayne and Sara Vicks, Clinton; third place, RJ Szuba, Clinton; fourth place, Jordan Bunger and Lindsey Langdon, Clinton.
In the junior division, computer/math/engineering, the winner was Nathan Killian, Poland Central School.
Accomplished NASA astronaut Capt. Lee M. E. Morin joined U.S. Rep. Sherwood Boehlert in welcoming and congratulating participants. Boehlert, chair of the House Science Committee and a 1961 graduate of Utica College, has been a longtime supporter of both the college and its annual science fair.
Nearly 50 students from nine area schools participated in this year’s fair.
