Utica, NY (03/09/2006) - Utica College has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the Credit Bureau of Utica Fund of The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc., to develop a curriculum in insurance and risk management. The Community Foundation’s grant will support the start up with $30,000 a year for the next five years.

The idea for developing the curriculum came both from faculty in the UC business programs and from local insurance professionals, said John Johnsen, dean of social sciences and management. There is a perceived need for a center of college-level instruction in insurance in our region. At present, Johnsen said, no college or university in Central New York has a program in insurance, despite the demand. The curriculum will fall under the existing management major.

Currently there are more than 200 insurance agencies, brokers and services within a 10-mile radius of Utica, as well as a number of insurance company home offices. This represents a major economic force, requiring a constant, high quality pool of potential employees.

“Utica College is very grateful for the support of The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida County and The Credit Bureau of Utica Fund,” said Laura Casamento, vice president for institutional advancement. “Furthermore, we are pleased to partner with the business community to develop concentrations in areas that promise substantial job growth.”

Planning for the curriculum, Johnsen said, will include developing courses highlighting various types of insurance, as well as an integrated perspective on the full range of risk possibilities faced by a firm, its employees and customers. The curriculum may also include electives such as business law, information security and economic crime investigation.
