UC Professor Talks on Black History

Utica, NY (02/12/2006) - The Utica College Black Student Union will sponsor a presentation by Jan DeAmicis, professor of sociology, about the Underground Railroad and its connection to the local area.The presentation will take place Thursday, Feb. 16 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Strebel Lounge. It is open to the public and Utica College community, and is free of charge.
In celebration of Black History Month, this special presentation highlights the history of African Americans in the Mohawk Valley and the area’s connection to the Underground Railroad through specific places, events and people. During the abolition movement, Oneida County had an active role in the Underground Railroad, and was considered a safe haven for many of its travelers.
The Black Student Union is an organization that promotes awareness of African American culture, diversity and unity throughout the Utica College campus and the community.
About Utica College – Founded in 1946, Utica College is a comprehensive private institution that grants the Syracuse University baccalaureate degree and the Utica College master’s and doctoral degrees. The College, located in central New York, approximately 90 miles west of Albany and 50 miles east of Syracuse, currently enrolls an approximated 2,300 undergraduate and 350 graduate students in 30 undergraduate majors, 24 minors, 12 master’s and two doctoral degree programs.
