Utica, NY (10/04/2005) - The Slocum-Dickson Foundation has awarded a $6,000 grant to Utica College that will support a specialized geriatric education program for local health care professionals.

The 2005 Geriatric Scholar Certificate Program is a 40-hour professional training program designed to improve the quality of life for seniors by educating health care professionals who care for the elderly. Topics that will be discussed include aging myths and elder abuse, the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and unique approaches to caring for the elderly. The Geriatric Scholar program will be held one day a week over a five-week period culminating in a Mental Health Teaching Day at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse.

Physicians, physical therapists, nurses, chaplains, dietitians, nursing home administrators, and social workers may receive continuing education credits upon completion of the program, as well as a certificate from New York University. The Slocum-Dickson Foundation has been a financial sponsor of this program in the Mohawk Valley region since 2001.

In addition to Utica College, this certificate program is presented by The Columbia University Stroud Center, Upstate Medical University Binghamton Clinical Campus/CARES Project, The Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers, Crouse Hospital, Inc., and is sponsored by the Office of Continuing Medical Education at SUNY Upstate Medical University and Heritage Health Care.
