Utica, NY (06/21/2005) - Utica College has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Slocum-Dickson
Foundation toward the purchase of additional specialized equipment for
nursing education.

Mary Katharine Maroney, Ph.D., RN, director
and professor of nursing, said the grant will be used toward purchase
of a computerized nursing simulation training manikin, which can be
used for a complete range of patient assessment and care procedures,
including wound care and assessment, tube insertion, and injections.
The manikin can even make sounds to simulate human articulation,
breathing, and pulse.

"This manikin will be a tremendous aid in
nursing education," Maroney said. "This new technology will allow
students the opportunity to practice intravenous procedures, as well as
care and procedures that would be performed on patients following
surgery. As the clinical practice advances, so must our teaching
techniques."

Today's complex health care delivery system
requires a well-educated, professional nursing force. The nursing
program at Utica College is designed to provide students with a liberal
education as well as a professional foundation integrating nursing
theory with skills required for nursing practice. Graduates of the
program have opportunities in a variety of settings including acute
care, community agencies, home care, and schools. Outstanding faculty,
personal attention, and extensive opportunities for clinical
experiences contribute to Utica College's reputation for excellence.

The
Utica College program is approved by the New York State Education
Department and has enjoyed full accreditation from the National League
for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. throughout its 21-year
existence, and is a member of the League's Council of Baccalaureate and
Higher Degree Programs. Graduates are eligible to take the National
Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN).
The
Slocum-Dickson Foundation was established to improve and advance the
science of medicine and surgery, through philanthropic and charitable
activities.
