UC to Honor Pioneer in Physical Therapy Education


Samuel B. Feitelberg to Receive Doctor of Science Honorary Degree

Utica, NY (05/14/2015) - Utica College will confer an honorary doctor of science degree to Samuel B. Feitelberg during the graduate commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 16 at 2 p.m. at The Stanley in Utica.

A mentor to hundreds of students, faculty and staff, Feitelberg founded three physical therapy academic programs during his career. He served as program chair or director at each of these and has been awarded professor emeritus status. As a member and fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Feitelberg has been very active in both organizations nationally as well as the New York State and Vermont organizations. Feitelberg helped to create the Journal of Physical Therapy Education, having identified the need for research to support education methodology for instructing physical therapy students.

Actively involved with government agencies and a number of social causes, Feitelberg served at Walter Reed Army Medical Center during the Korean War.  He has been a consultant for the Vermont Department of Public Health Department of Long-Term Care, and was appointed to the state Health Care Policy Council. He designed and organized the treatment area and program for the research institute for the National Parkinsons Foundation in Miami. He is an associate member of the International Society for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and was recently appointed to the Committee on Disaster of the World Health Organization of the United Nations. In 2007, as a Rotarian, during his third attempt at retirement, Feitelberg initiated the formation of a rehabilitation center in Tela, Honduras. He continues to supervise the program through annual vists.

The 66th graduate commencement will take place on Saturday, May 16 at The Stanley where 650 graduate students will receive their masters and doctoral degrees. Presenting the graduate commencement address will be Jeremy W. Earl ’13, PT. In 1999, Earl earned his bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from UC, and later his master’s degree in health care administration in 2013.
