Utica, NY (04/21/2015) - Greg Fulkerson, fellow of the Center for Small Cities and Rural Studies at Utica College, and Achim Koeddermann, associate professor of philosophy at SUNY Oneonta, will present a talk, “Civil Society and the City: A Community Discussion,” on Wednesday, April 22.

Big and flashy development in cities may draw attention but it’s not always the route to success. Oftentimes, small-scale development is most beneficial for creating a healthy community.

Fulkerson and Koeddermann will discuss the ingredients necessary to create a sustainable and healthy community. It will take place at 7:30 p.m. at The Other Side in Utica, 2011 Genesee St. It is free and open to the public.

Fulkerson earned a master’s degree in sociology from Western Michigan University and obtained his Ph.D. from North Carolina State in 2006. Fulkerson is now an associate professor of sociology at SUNY Oneonta. Fulkerson’s current research focuses on the local and global processes leading to environmental degradation and the social response to these problems.

Koeddermann earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Johannes Gutenberg University. Koeddermann specializes in environmental and media ethics. Koeddermann is an associate professor of philosophy at SUNY Oneonta.
