Utica, NY (03/02/2015) - Dr. Todd S. Hutton, Utica College’s eighth president and longest-serving chief executive officer in the College’s history, announced to the college community this evening that he plans to retire effective August 1, 2016.In a letter to the Utica College community, Dr. Hutton wrote: “Certainly it is not time to say goodbye, but I do want to express my deepest gratitude to our Board, the Faculty, and the UC community for the honor and opportunity to serve Utica College for the past sixteen and a half years. I can think of no place I would rather have been, or job I would rather have held, than the UC presidency. Any presidency is a calling and lifestyle, but it is a true privilege and solemn responsibility guiding this relatively young institution. Together we have made amazing progress moving UC forward with a much strengthened foundation and reputation in the community of higher education, and as a result I have absolutely no doubt that the College will attract someone who will guide this institution to even higher aspirations and expectations and greater achievements.”
“President Hutton is highly respected by the higher education community who have come to know him as one of the most innovative and entrepreneurial small university presidents in the country,” says Mark Pilipczuk, chairperson-elect of the Utica College Board of Trustees. “More important, he has proven himself to be the ideal president for Utica College. He has been a strong and transformative leader on a wide range of critical issues, a great champion of the College and the Mohawk Valley, and a wonderful advocate for students.”
Pilipczuk said the board of trustees will begin a national search for Dr. Hutton’s successor later this spring. The board has selected trustee Mark Salsbury to serve as chair of the search committee.
When Dr. Hutton concludes his presidency on August 1, 2016 it will mark the 18th anniversary of his appointment as president. In 1998, he became the first president and CEO selected by the independent board of trustees.
Under President Hutton’s leadership, Utica College:
• Has increased freshman enrollment by 77 percent and total enrollment by more than 250 percent;
• Introduced more than 40 new academic programs, several of which have earned the College national and international recognition;
• Dedicated nine new buildings, including two state-of-the-art academic buildings, F. Eugene Romano Hall and the Economic Crime, Justice Studies, and Cybersecurity Building;
• Invested significantly in the physical plant;
• Instituted major reform in College governance;
• Expanded athletics from 11 to 25 programs;
• Completed a comprehensive campaign that exceeded its goal by nearly $10 million;
• Opened its first out-of-state campus;
• Expanded its reputation in both the marketplace and higher education community; and
• Completed its transition to full independence.
During this period of dramatic growth and transformation, Dr. Hutton has maintained a steadfast commitment to Utica College’s mission and core values, including its traditions of student-centeredness, accessibility, and diversity, as well as its founding promise to the people of the Mohawk Valley.
Today, he is regarded as a leading voice within the private higher education sector, as evidenced by his appointment as chair of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities and his selection as a member of a select national panel studying the future of independent higher education. In addition, he served three-year terms on the boards of directors of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) and the Council of Independent Colleges. He also served as a faculty speaker for the American Academic Leadership Institute.
Throughout his tenure at Utica College, Dr. Hutton has been actively involved in local community organizations. He serves on the board of directors of the School and Business Alliance and the Mohawk Valley Economic Development Growth Enterprises Corp., and represented Oneida County on the Central Upstate Regional Alliance, a 12-county, public-private economic development consortium that seeks to transform the regional economy. Dr. Hutton also serves on the Mohawk Valley Health System's Board of Directors, is past president of the Board of Directors for the United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area, and has served on the board of directors of the Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Central New York Community Arts Council, and the Utica Symphony. In 2009, Dr. Hutton was elected to the Genesis Group’s Education Hall of Distinction.
Prior to his selection as Utica College president, Dr. Hutton was vice president for academic administration at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, where he served for eight years. He was previously assistant to the president at Austin College in Sherman, TX for four years, where he also served on the graduate faculty of the Austin Teacher Program.
He holds an A.B. degree in English from Davidson College, a master's of education in school psychology/psychological foundations from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. in Education (Sociology of Education and Comparative Education) from Duke University. In October 2007, he received an honorary doctorate from Dong-eui University in Pusan, Korea.
