Utica, NY (02/26/2015) - On Friday, March 6 and Sunday, March 8, Utica College students will perform the award-winning play, Vagina Monologues, written by Eve Ensler.

Each year, the UC community performs Vagina Monologues to raise awareness of violence against women and as well as donations to benefit organizations that work to end such violence.

“Vagina Monologues has given a voice to the experiences and feelings that many women have regarding their sexuality and struggles,” said Wayne Edwards, director of V-Day at UC.

Vagina Monologues is based on more than 200 interviews of women conducted by Ensler. The success of the play, which has been adapted into an HBO feature-length film, translated into 48 different languages and performed in more than 140 countries, inspired the development of V-Day, a movement established in 1998 to raise awareness and funds to end the violence against women and girls.

Since the inception of V-Day, more than $100 million has been raised to combat the violence against women and more than 13,000 anti-violence programs and safe houses have been established in multiple third-world countries.

Ensler, a Tony Award winning playwrite, has devoted her life to ending the violence against women. She has been named to many honorable lists including “150 Women Who Changed the World,” by Newsweek, “125 Women Who Changed Our World,” by Good Housekeeping Magazine, and “100 Most Influential Women,” by The Guardian. Ensler’s articles can be seen in numerous national publications including The Huffington Post, Glamour Magazine, The Guardian, The Washington Post and Marie Claire, as well as a regular column in O Magazine.

In lieu of admission, a suggested donation of $3 to benefit the Victims of Violence House is encouraged.

The production will take place in the Strebel Student Center Auditorium at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 6 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 8.
