Utica, NY (01/27/2015) - Utica College now offers an online graduate certificate, Health Care Advocacy and Navigation. The online program is designed for professionals who want to enhance their ability to promote patient-centric health care. With a core program and two specializations, Policy and Private Practice, students are able to gain the specific skills that will enhance their careers and the service they provide to their patients.

Health care is an increasingly complex industry, and patients are often daunted by the health care system. They are in unfamiliar territory and are unsure of their diagnoses, prognoses, and treatments as well as their rights within the system. Moreover, the face of health care in the U.S. is changing, moving from individual to population-based care. With this transformation, professionals who want to empower patients will gain an advanced understanding of health care, patients’ perspectives of their illnesses, and health care law and ethics that will enable them to ensure patients have a voice in their own care.

"The ever-changing health care environment – including insurance coverage choices, treatment options and rising costs - has created a perfect storm for health care advocacy. In this Certificate Program, professionals will have the opportunity to gain advanced understanding of patient-centric care, how patients perceive their illnesses and health care ethics, policy and law in order to empower patients and ensure their voices are heard," said Maria DeGiglio, program director and professor of practice - Health Care Advocacy and Navigation.

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
• Analyze the concepts of health care advocacy/navigation and the role of the health care advocate/navigator.
• Help individuals navigate the complex health care system and/or work at the community, organization or systemic level to improve the health care system.
• Integrate law, policy and ethics into their understanding of the US health care system
• Effectively communicate concerns, diagnoses, prognoses and treatment options with patients, families, and the health care team.
• Develop skills that complement or supplement an existing career, career change, future career goals and/or a master's degree or doctoral program as well as behave with integrity and professionalism.

Utica College, accredited by the Commission of Higher Education of the Middle States Associates of Colleges and Schools, offers a number of health care majors, including nursing, physical and occupational therapy, therapeutic recreation, psychology-child life, and wellness adventure and education.
