Utica, NY (12/18/2014) - For the first time, Utica College students will attend the American Physical Society Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics hosted by Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Brittany Vanderhoof and Hope Murphy were selected to attend the three-day conference in January.

Dr. Linda Dake, professor of physics and department chair, said this conference presents a unique opportunity for students. “This conference will be a great experience for our students, especially the chance to meet and interact with other woman physicists,” Dake said. “One of the students, Hope Murphy, will even be presenting on research she did this past summer,” said Dake.

Murphy’s research, conducted during a summer undergraduate research experience at Texas Christian University, examines different models used to predict cancer tumor growth with and without chemotherapy. “Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S.,” Murphy stated in her research abstract. “This work highlights the need for detailed experiments to aid in choosing appropriate cancer growth models.”

Both Vanderhoof and Murphy applied to attend the prestigious conference last semester and were selected based on a number of factors. The purpose of the conference, according to the American Physical Society, is to help undergraduate women continue in physics by providing them with the opportunity to experience a professional conference, information about graduate school and professions in physics, and access to other women in physics of all ages with whom they can share experiences, advice and ideas.

The conference, which will take place Jan. 16 to 18, will also include a tour of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, as well as the labs at Rutgers. Five noted women physicists will speak – Dr. Kathryn Johnson of Columbia University, Dr. Rhiannon Meharchand of the Institute for Defense Analyses, Dr. Gabriela González of Louisiana State University, Dr. Luz Martinez-Miranda of the University of Maryland and Dr. Suzanne Brahmia of Rutgers University.
