Utica, NY (10/25/2014) - Utica College’s Department of Performing and Fine Arts will present its Fall 2014 play, “The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later.”The story begins in 1998, when gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was brutally beaten, tied to a fence and subsequently died of his injuries. The crime rattled the country, leaving people asking why and how such a hateful crime occurs.
Members of the Tectonic Theatre Company traveled to Laramie and conducted interviews with the people of the town. Ten years later, they returned to Laramie to try to understand the long-term effects of the murder. Those interviews are the basis for this play.
“This is theatre for social consciousness,” said Ann Carey, director of the play and adjunct instructor of theatre. “I chose this show because it reflects how effective, immediate and powerful using people's real stories can be. Theatre can be used to hold up a mirror to society.”
The play will be performed on Nov. 6, 7 and 8 at 8 p.m., closing on Sunday, Nov. 9 with a special matinee performance at 2 p.m. in Strebel Student Center Auditorium at Utica College. Tickets are available at the door for $4, general admission.
