Utica, NY (10/14/2014) - The rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans are at the forefront of the national conversation. Landmark court decisions have brought down bans on same-sex marriage across the country.

In honor of LGBT history month, the Utica College Center for Historical Research will host a talk by Leigh Ann Wheeler, professor of history at Binghamton University. The talk is titled, “Sexual Civil Liberties and the Rise of Gay Rights: An Untold Story of Stealth and Wealth.” As the fight for LGBT equality continues to gain momentum, Wheeler will take a look back at where we came from and how people and organizations have caused a massive shift in ideology.

Wheeler is the author of How Sex Became a Civil Liberty and Against Obscenity: Reform and the Politics of Womanhood in America, 1873-1935. In both of her books, Wheeler explores the changes in our nation’s culture with relation to sex and the role organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union played in these changes. Her research efforts continue to explore the impact individual people have had on shaping the fight for LGBT rights.

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in Macfarlane Auditorium in UC’s DePerno Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public, and is supported by the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) and the Diversity Committee at UC.
