Utica, NY (10/10/2014) - A century after World War I took place, Utica College’s Center for Historical Research will host a symposium, “WWI@100: A Symposium on the Centennial of the Great War.”

WWI was a war of firsts. It brought the world new weapons and the dawn of airpower. It created a world power out of the United States, ushered in fascist regimes and communist states, marked the zenith of the British Empire and was the beginning of the end of colonialism. It was the world’s first true encounter with total war.

This daylong event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 8, featuring six historian speakers: Peter DeSimone of Utica College, Robert G. Kane of Niagara University, John Langdon of Le Moyne College, June Mastan of the University of Albany, Mary McCune of SUNY Oswego and Gary B. Ostrower of Alfred University. The symposium will discuss WWI from a variety of perspectives.

The symposium will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Utica College’s Economic Crime, Justice Studies and Cybersecurity Building.

Registration is free for students and $25 for all others; this includes meals and a reception. The registration deadline has been extended until Oct. 30.

Founded in 2000, UC’s Center for Historical Research sponsors a variety of history related events, including UC’s Brown Bag Lunch Lecture Series, History Month events and commemorative “@” series.

To register for the symposium, visit: http://www.utica.edu/WWI@100.
