Panel to Examine Balance Between Liberty, Security

Expert Panelists Discuss Personal Privacy in Digital Age

Utica, NY (10/08/2014) - Edward Snowden’s massive leak of classified information about the U.S. government’s surveillance efforts triggered a nationwide debate. Is it possible to balance both liberty and security when a majority of our interactions with others happen using some form of electronic communication? A diverse panel of experts will aim to explore this and other key questions in the debate on data privacy.

The Utica College School of Business and Justice Studies will host an interdisciplinary panel on data privacy on Friday, Oct. 10 from 1 to 2 p.m.
Panelists will include Leslie Corbo, cybersecurity analyst at Exelis; Chandler Givens, associate and technical research director of Edelson PC; Suzanne Lynch, professor of practice in economic crime at Utica College; and Raymond Philo, professor of practice in criminal justice and executive director of the Economic Crime and Cybersecurity Institute at Utica College. Opening remarks will be given by Bill Virkler, associate dean of the School of Business and Justice Studies. Austen Givens, professor of practice in cybersecurity, will moderate the panel.

The panel will be held in the Carbone Family Auditorium in the Economic Crime and Justice Studies and Cybersecurity building at Utica College. It will take place at 1 p.m.: light refreshments will be served. The presentation is free and open to the public, registration is not required.
