30 UC Nursing Students Inducted into Honor Society

Honor Society Taps Students from All 3 of UC's Nursing Programs

Utica, NY (04/10/2014) - Utica College offers three different ways of obtaining a nursing degree: the traditional campus-based nursing program, bachelor of science in nursing for nurses already working in the field (RN-BS), and the accelerated second degree nursing (ASDN) program for those who have a bachelor’s degree in another discipline but have decided to pursue nursing.

For the first time, Utica College nursing students from all three programs have been honored with induction into the prestigious Sigma Theta Tau (STTI) honor society.

“To have students from each of our nursing programs inducted into STTI is truly a measure of excellence,” said Cathy Brownell, associate professor and chair of nursing at UC. “I couldn’t be more proud of our students and our professors.”

STTI membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and to nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing.

The following RN-BS students were inducted:

STTI’s mission is advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership and service. It has more than 130,000 active members in more than 85 countries.

UC’s campus-based program in nursing offers a rigorous program of foundational study, practical training and clinical experience in the discipline, complemented by comprehensive learning in the liberal arts.

Nursing students at UC work closely with exceptionally accomplished faculty and have access to UC's state-of-the-art Albert and Gloria Shaheen Nursing Laboratory, which features a fully-equipped hospital ward and advanced learning technologies.

The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.

UC’s RN-BS online program prepares licensed registered nurses (RN) for an enhanced career in today's demanding healthcare environment. Graduates of the program have the added preparation to assume roles that demand critical-thinking, decision-making, communication and leadership skills.

The program is approved by the New York State Education Department and is a member of the League's Council of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs. It is also accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
UC’s ASDN program offers students with a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field the chance to finish nursing school in just 16 months. It balances online courses with hands-on clinical rotations throughout Central New York. The simulation lab in Syracuse features the same medical technology used at hospitals and other healthcare settings. The ASDN program is approved by the New York State Education Department.
