Orlin to Give Keynote at Naturalization Ceremony

UC Prof, Human Rights Advocate to Welcome 39 New U.S. Citizens

Utica, NY (04/09/2014) - Thirty-nine people will become U.S. citizens Thursday (April 10) in a Naturalization Ceremony. U.S. District Judge David N. Hurd will preside over the ceremony.

Theodore Orlin, Harold T. Clark Jr. Emeritus of Human Rights Scholarship and Advocacy (2005-2010) and professor of government and politics at Utica College, will be the keynote speaker at the ceremony. Orlin is the founder and director of the Human Rights Advocacy Program (HRAP) and has served as president of the International Human Rights Education Consortium (IHREC). He earned his bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College and a Juris Doctorate from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Orlin has traveled the world on human rights advocacy missions, most recently speaking before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.

The 39 new citizens represent 11 nations from around the world including Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Burma, China, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Moldova, Somalia, Tunisia, Ukraine and Vietnam.

The ceremony will also feature remarks from one of the new citizens; the New Hartford American Legion Post 1376 will present the colors.

The citizens will be sworn in at 11 a.m. at the United States District Courthouse on Broad Street in Utica, with a reception to follow, sponsored by the Verizon Foundation Pioneers. The ceremony is open to the public and cameras are welcome.
