Local HS Winners to Compete at UC Regional Science Fair

80 Students to Participate in 36th Annual Regional Event

Utica, NY (03/04/2014) - Ever wonder if the ticks in your backyard carry Lyme disease? Allie Lehman, an eighth-grader from Clinton Middle School, is the budding scientist to ask.

On Saturday, March 8, 80 local students from grades seven through 12, including Lehman, will present their research projects at the 36th Annual Utica College Regional Science Fair in the Library Concourse.

Students from area schools in Oneida and Chenango counties will compete on the junior level (grades 7-8), and on the senior level (grades 9-12). Students will present their findings in more than 15 different science and engineering categories to earn prizes such as tuition scholarships, trophies and cash prizes.

The student given the title of grand champion will be awarded a half-tuition scholarship to UC for two years, as well as the opportunity to compete at science fairs affiliate fair, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) in May in Los Angeles. Each year, the winner of the Intel ISEF is presented with $75,000, and more than $2.1 million in prizes are also awarded.
This year, the number of entrants has grown to more than 80 students presenting more than 60 projects. Students are free to present on a wide range of topics such as animal science, microbiology and medicine and health sciences.

Hunter Broadbent, a seventh-grade student from Poland Central School will showcase his project titled, “Helping Keep Our Police Safe While Direction Traffic.” Over the past several months, Broadbent drew conclusions about traffic flow by utilizing an LED light board to model traffic signals.

This event is free and is open to the public from 1 to 3 p.m. The presentation of grand champions’ prizes and special awards will begin at 2 p.m. after the two rounds of judging have been completed.
