Utica, NY (02/24/2014) - What is better than sitting by the fire on a cold winter night with a cup of hot chocolate? Now think about sleeping in a tent during the last week of February in upstate New York … chilly. The Utica College colony of Alpha Chi Rho are braving the elements and camping behind Strebel Student Center from Sunday, Feb. 23 to Saturday, March 1 in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

Brothers of the fraternity will “man” the campsite for the entire week as well as hosting daily events to spread cancer awareness within the community. Each day will be themed to fight a different kind of cancer.

One hundred percent of all donations received will be donated to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. Alpha Chi Rho has set a goal of $2,500 for the weeklong event. The fraternity encourages students, faculty, staff and community members to come to the campsite for educational opportunities, games and donations to support the American Cancer Society.

Alpha Chi Rho brother and criminal justice major at Utica College Alexander Hodkinson said, “Most families have been affected in some way by cancer, so we have a strong passion collectively to see this year’s Deep Freeze be successful. Some might say that tenting outside for a week in the winter is foolish, but for my brothers and me, it’s the least that we can do for those that fight cancer.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation is encouraged to visit the AXP campsite on the UC campus or online at their team page at main.acsevents.org/goto/AXP
