Utica, NY (01/16/2014) - Following is a statement from Utica College President Todd S. Hutton regarding the American Studies Association’s academic boycott of Israel:“The American Studies Association’s resolution urging American universities to boycott Israeli institutions of higher education is a horribly misguided effort that not only further incites the conflict that separates the Israeli and Palestinian people, but undermines the principles of academic freedom and autonomy on which higher education was founded. Universities exist to examine, elucidate, and critique societal issues from all perspectives. While a boycott is a powerful and purposeful tool as both a sanction and a symbol, the ASA’s effort threatens the values that represent the heart of the higher education enterprise. For this reason, while I deeply respect the dissenting opinions on this topic, I reject the ASA’s call for an academic boycott of Israel.”
