Utica College to Hold Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony Sunday; Graduate Ceremony Saturday


Sixty-fourth Cemmencement for Utica College
582 undergraduate students and 511 graduate students participate in Commencement ceremonies

Utica, NY (05/15/2013) - A total of 582 undergraduate students and 511 graduate students will have the chance to turn their tassels at Utica College’s Undergraduate and Graduate Commencement ceremonies this weekend. The undergraduate ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 19 at 9:30 a.m. at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The graduate ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 18 at 2 p.m. at the Stanley Theater.

The undergraduate commencement speaker is Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Eugene Robinson. He has written about high-profile stories throughout his career including the Patricia Hearst trial. Robinson was awarded the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in recognition of his columns that focused on the first African-American U.S. presidential candidate to win votes in the Electoral College, now-president Barack Obama. 

Robinson will be awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree at the ceremony.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Quynh Lam will also be awarded with a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree for her extraordinary efforts as an educator in Vietnam, and encouraging her students to continue their studies at Utica College.

The undergraduate class of 2013’s valedictorian is Brandy Miller from Rome, N.Y. Miller has earned her degree in English and Adolescence Education. The salutatorian is Yulia Vabishchevich, a biology major, from Frankfort, N.Y.

The commencement speaker for the graduate ceremony is Tracy Hatt-Doering, a 2011 graduate of Utica College’s Economic Crime Management master’s degree program. Hatt-Doering is a senior analyst with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in Washington, D.C.
