Is All Fair in Love and Cyber Warfare?

UC's Applied Ethics Institute to Host Discussion on Ethics of Cyber Warfare

Utica, NY (02/14/2013) - The Applied Ethics Institute at Utica College will host a public lecture, “The Ethics of War and the Ethics of Cyber Warfare,” on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. The presentation will be held in the Carbone Auditorium in the Economic Crime and Justice Studies Building and is free and open to the public. 

Randall R. Dipert, Ph.D., C.S. Peirce Professor of American Philosophy at SUNY Buffalo, specializes in ontology, C.S. Peirce, and just war theory.  His 2010 article, “The Ethics of Cyber Warfare,” was published in the Journal of Military Ethics.

The introduction of cyber warfare brings with it a new set of questions and concerns.  A recent well-acknowledged instance of cyber warfare is the Stuxnet virus, which involved U.S. and Israeli malware found in Iranian uranium processing systems in order to slow nuclear development.

Dipert will discuss just war theory to set the tone for the discussion concerning cyber warfare, or nation-on-nation attacks using and targeting networks and computers.

Topics that will be discussed include:
• The morality of humanitarian intervention
• The distinction between lawful and unlawful combatants
• The acceptability of preemptive and preventive war
• The difference between cyber espionage and theft of industrial and military secrets and cyber attacks
