UC to Host Memorial Service for Harold Pier
Professor Emeritus of Chemistry Known for Varied Interests

Memorial service to honor the life of longtime professor

Utica, NY (11/08/2012) - A memorial service will be held for Harold William Pier, Utica College professor emeritus of chemistry, on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. in the Utica College Library Concourse.Designated parking for guests will be available, with a UC van providing shuttle service to and from the Library Concourse.
Pier passed away Oct. 19 at his home in Remsen. He was 77.
He began his career at UC in 1963, having earned his bachelor’s degree at Pennsylvania State University and his master’s and Ph.D. at the University of Delaware. Dedicated to the liberal arts ideal, Pier was a strong advocate of writing-across-the-curriculum and other teaching methods aimed at bridging the gap between science and other kinds of learning. A recipient of the Crisafulli Distinguished Teaching Award in 1987, he retired in 1999.
He is remembered by his colleagues for his wit, dedication to teaching, love for outdoor activities, his talent as a musician and his skills in creative writing. In 2011, Pier became president of the Tramp and Trail Club of Utica, and was an energetic organizer and trailblazer for many hikes, bikes, and snowshoe and cross-country outings.
Pier loved bird-watching, gardening, classical and jazz music, playing the trumpet and in the bell choir at First Presbyterian Church of Little Falls.
Surviving are his partner, Nancy Coleman; his four sons, Jerome, Edward, David and Gregory; his stepdaughter, Amanda Zecca; and two granddaughters, Arianna and Aisha Pier.
