UC, Partners Host "MV Independent Higher Education Forum"

Study Finds Utica College Tops $166 Million in Regional Impact

Utica, NY (10/16/2012) - With total payroll exceeding $23.1 billion for 373,800 direct, indirect and induced jobs, New York’s independent colleges and universities are a major source of jobs in all regions of New York State, according to a new economic analysis by the Center for Governmental Research (CGR) released by the Commission of Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU).

The same study determined that Utica College generated more than $166 million in annual economic activity in the Mohawk Valley.

Utica College, Hartwick College, Pratt MWP, St. Elizabeth College of Nursing, and Hamilton College, in conjunction with CICU, hosted the “Mohawk Valley Independent Higher Education Forum: Brainpower, Partnerships and Resources for Our Region” this morning.

The forum showcased partnerships and provided an opportunity for exchanging ideas and networking for higher education, government, business and community leaders. Discussions focused on further harnessing independent higher education’s community and workforce contributions for the economic and social good of the region.

The program featured a community partners fair and a panel discussion, “Think Globally, Hire Locally: A Dialogue about Working with Campuses to Attract and Retain Talent.”

In total, the 100-plus independent colleges and universities in New York State contributed $63.2 billion to the state’s economy in 2011. In Upstate New York - the area from the Mid-Hudson Valley region to the North Country to Western New York - independent (private, not-for-profit) colleges and universities directly employ 78,700 with a payroll that exceeds $5.1 billion.

“In a labor market struggling to recover from the Great Recession, both young people and established workers know that they must invest more in their personal ‘capital’- the education and training they bring to the marketplace,” said CGR’s chief researcher Kent Gardner, who led the study. “New York’s independent colleges and universities have expanded to fill that need.”


About Utica College – Utica College, founded in 1946, is a comprehensive private institution offering bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. The College, located in upstate central New York, approximately 90 miles west of Albany and 50 miles east of Syracuse, currently enrolls over 3,700 students in 37 undergraduate majors, 27 minors, 22 master’s and two doctoral degree programs.
