UC to Host Mohawk Valley Writing Project Summer Institute

Special Summer Sessions for Teachers, Writers

Utica, NY (06/13/2012) - As part of its effort to increase quality education through improved writing, the Mohawk Valley Writing Project (MVWP) will hold its 2012 Summer Institute at Utica College beginning June 25.

The Summer Institute is a five-week long intensive professional development experience for teachers in the Mohawk Valley committed to quality literacy instruction. Participants will gather on the UC campus to concentrate on various methods of writing, research and teaching.

This summer, the MVWP is providing local educators and writers with 227 hours of open programming and several opportunities. Registration for 45 or more hours will ensure eligibility for a reduced rate. Also, anyone matriculated in a graduate program may take 15 hours of MVWP programming for free.

In addition to the summer institute, the MVWP is also offering more than 30 workshops including Avoiding Teacher Burn-Out: Keeping the Spark in Your Teaching Life, An Overnight Writing Retreat, Conspiracy Theory, A Day at the Zoo, A Day at the Beach and more. These workshops are designed for teachers and writers seeking to increase their knowledge in key areas related to their profession. The programs are divided into several categories such as hourly, multiple whole days and half-days, and single day and single half-days.

The deadline to register for MVWP summer programming is June 22. Due to space limitations, only the first 20 registrants are guaranteed places in the workshops. 

The MVWP is an affiliate of the National Writing Project, a federally funded professional development program for K-12 teachers across the country. Its goal is to inspire practicing teachers and develop a local network in which their insights, practices, and wisdom can be shared through in service projects. Writing Project Teacher Consultants can become leaders in their area by helping to build vital and productive literacy communities in their schools.
