Utica, NY (05/31/2012) - The lamp of knowledge will continue to burn brightly for 180 Utica City School District (UCSD) students in grades seven through nine who participate in the 21st Century Literacy: Young Scholars Summer Enrichment Program at Utica College thanks to a $28,160 grant from the M&T Bank/Partner’s Trust Bank Charitable Fund, a donor advised-fund of The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, Inc.

The grant will help fund the summer program which offers instruction in mathematics, science, and English language arts to middle and high school Young Scholars students in the district, while underscoring the importance of student responsibility in learning.

The award is timely, as the successful program continues within a challenging economic climate for education.

Since 1993, the Young Scholars Liberty Partnerships Program has guided more than 900 USCD students in its 19 years, motivating the students to stay in school, earn a New York State Regents Diploma with advanced designation and pursue post-secondary education.  Since 2005, 97 percent of Young Scholars graduates enrolled in college.  The program currently serves 350 students each academic year.
